Notice Board Installation Guide
How to Install a Post-Mounted Board Using Postcrete
Installing a post-mounted board is a straightforward DIY project when you use postcrete. Whether you’re fitting a sign, notice board, or information panel, postcrete allows you to secure posts quickly without mixing traditional concrete. Follow this step-by-step guide to achieve a strong, level, and long-lasting installation.
Tools & Materials You’ll Need
-
Post-mounted board (with posts attached or supplied separately)
-
Postcrete (fast-setting concrete)
-
Spade or post-hole digger
-
Spirit level
-
Tape measure
-
Wooden stakes or temporary supports
-
Water (clean tap water)
-
Gravel or hardcore (optional, for drainage)
-
Protective gloves and safety footwear
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
1. Mark Out the Position
Begin by measuring and marking the exact position of your board. Double-check spacing and alignment, especially if installing multiple boards. Accuracy at this stage prevents repositioning later.
2. Dig the Post Holes
Dig a hole for each post. As a general rule:
-
Depth: Around 600 mm (2 ft)
-
Width: Approximately 300 mm (1 ft)
For taller or heavier boards, increase the depth for extra stability. Remove loose soil from the bottom of the hole.
3. Add Drainage (Optional but Recommended)
Add a 50–75 mm layer of gravel to the base of each hole. This improves drainage and helps prevent water sitting around the post base over time.
4. Position the Board and Posts
Lower the posts into the holes and position the board correctly. Use a spirit level to check that the board is perfectly vertical from both the front and side.
Secure the board temporarily with wooden stakes or braces to keep it upright while setting.
5. Add the Postcrete
Pour the postcrete directly from the bag into the hole, filling evenly around the post. Do not mix it beforehand.
Fill to approximately 25 mm below ground level.
6. Add Water
Pour clean water onto the postcrete following the manufacturer’s guidance (usually around 2–3 litres per bag).
The water will soak through and activate the mix—no stirring required.
7. Final Alignment and Setting
Re-check the post alignment immediately and adjust if necessary. Postcrete begins to set within 5–10 minutes, so work efficiently.
Once set, gently backfill the final layer with soil or decorative gravel for a neat finish.
8. Allow to Cure
Although postcrete sets quickly, avoid attaching additional loads or applying pressure for at least 30–60 minutes. Full strength is typically achieved within 24 hours.
Installation Tips
-
Install on a dry day where possible.
-
Wear gloves—postcrete is alkaline.
-
For very soft or sandy ground, consider using extra postcrete.
-
Always follow the postcrete manufacturer’s instructions.
Final Thoughts
Using postcrete is one of the fastest and most reliable ways to install a post-mounted board. With minimal tools and preparation, you can achieve a professional, durable result that will stand firm for years to come.
